How to Become a Licensed Plumber in Texas

Texas strictly forbids providing services without a license. Apprentices are allowed to work under the direction of licensed plumbers.
From there, various licenses are available. Rising through the ranks of the industry can take several years.
Apprentices aren’t required to have a high school diploma or GED, but they must obtain one of the two to ultimately become licensed plumbers.
Types of Plumbing Licenses in Texas
Four types of plumber licenses are available in the state of Texas:
● Tradesman Plumber Limited License
● Journeyman License
● Master License
● Plumbing Inspector License
Plumbers with the Tradesman Plumber Limited License can provide services for single-family dwellings or duplexes as long as they are supervised by master plumbers. They can also train apprentices and provide additional services under the direction of a licensed journeyman or master plumber.
With a Journeyman License, plumbers can work under the supervision of a master plumber and supervise apprentices or plumbers who hold Tradesman Plumber Limited Licenses.
Master plumbers serve as supervisors for lower-ranking plumbers.
Plumbers who acquire a Plumbing Inspector License can inspect the work of other plumbers.
Cost to Obtain a Plumbing License in Texas
Apprentices need only pay a $15 registration fee.
To acquire a Tradesman Plumber Limited License, there’s a $36 exam fee and a $35 licensing fee.
Journeyman applicants must pay $40 for the exam and another $40 for their license.
Master plumber applicants pay $175 for the exam and $75 for the license.
Plumbing inspector applicants must pay $55 for both the exam and the license.
To earn the designation of Responsible Master Plumber and be allowed to supervise others, there’s an application fee of $345.
Plumbing License Exams
Plumber licensing exams in Texas are particularly stringent.
Journeyman exams include a 90-question written test, hands-on skill demonstrations, and knowledge of drainage and ventilation system design.
Master plumber exams include 210 questions covering numerous aspects of plumbing systems.
Plumbers are also required to participate in Continuing Professional Education to maintain their licenses.
Who Issues Plumbing Licenses in Texas?
Plumbing licenses in Texas are issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
This agency also handles registration for plumbing apprentices and other professionals in the field. It grants additional endorsements as well.
Additional Plumbing Certifications and Endorsements
Licensed plumbers in Texas can go above and beyond the basic requirements by earning additional certifications and endorsements.
They can receive National Inspection Testing and Certification or certification through the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials.
Furthermore, licensed plumbers may earn their Multipurpose Residential Fire Protection Sprinkler Specialist, Water Supply Protection Specialist, and Medical Gas Piping Installation endorsements.
Can I Transfer a Plumbing License to Texas?
Texas does not have plumbing license reciprocity, meaning plumbers from out of state cannot transfer their licenses into Texas.
